Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

Robust & Versatile Solutions for Demanding Industrial Duties

Overview - Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers are the workhorse of heavy industry, renowned for their robust construction and operational reliability under demanding conditions. Their versatile design is capable of handling a wide range of fluids, pressures, and temperatures, making them the proven solution for critical applications from petrochemical processing to large-scale machine cooling.

Key Benefits

  • Robust & Durable Construction: Engineered to withstand extreme pressures and temperatures, providing exceptional durability and a long operational life in harsh industrial environments.

  • High Thermal Performance: Can be designed for a wide range of thermal duties, providing efficient and reliable heat transfer for critical processes.

  • Design Versatility: Available in a wide range of materials and configurations (e.g., U-tube, fixed tube sheet, floating head) to meet specific process and maintenance requirements.

  • Serviceable Design: Many designs allow for the tube bundle to be removed, enabling mechanical cleaning, inspection, and repair to extend the life of the asset.

How a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Works

A Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger consists of a large cylindrical vessel (the shell) containing a bundle of tubes. One process fluid flows through the tubes, while the other flows over the outside of the tubes within the sealed shell. Baffles are often used within the shell to direct the flow of the shell-side fluid and increase turbulence, maximising heat transfer between the two fluids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shell and Tube exchangers are generally preferred for very high-pressure and high-temperature applications, or for fluids with high fouling potential that require robust mechanical cleaning.

TEMA (Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) provides design standards that ensure safety, reliability, and performance. We can supply units built to TEMA B, C, and R standards to suit your project's specific requirements.

Yes. Our technicians are highly experienced in servicing all major types and brands. Our services include on-site diagnostics, tube bundle removal and cleaning, re-tubing, and pressure testing.

To provide an accurate quote, we need to know your process requirements, including fluid types, temperatures, flow rates, and desired pressures. Our team can guide you through the specification process.

A fixed tube sheet design is mechanically simpler, while a U-tube design allows the tube bundle to expand and contract with temperature changes, reducing thermal stress, and also enables a second pass for increased heat transfer time. Our engineers can advise on the best design for your application.
